Numerology

The Pythagorean tradition of reading names and dates as number-fields: five core numbers, each with its own question.

Marks on each heading:Attributed A named tradition or text says this. It is not proof that anything will happen.Calculated An observation from astronomy or arithmetic, with its conventions stated.Editorial Our own wording. It is not a quotation of any source.

01Where it comes fromAttributed

The idea that numbers carry quality is very old. The Pythagorean school of the sixth century BCE held that number was the principle of all things. In the Hellenistic world, isopsephy, the practice of adding the number value of letters, was used to read names. Hebrew gematria and Arabic abjad systems do the same. The modern form, with letters mapped to digits 1–9, grew in the early twentieth century in the English-speaking world.

Indian numerology developed separately, with its own systems based on Vedic and Jyotisha ideas, in which the digits link to the nine grahas. Chinese traditions have a strong cultural number-sense of their own, for example the luck of the numbers eight and four.

02Where Number-Wisdom Comes FromAttributed

Numerology needs no instruments at all — only names and dates, which is part of why it turns up independently in so many places. Pythagoras (6th c. BCE) taught that number is the essence of all things; his followers reduced names to vibrational sums. Jewish gematria assigned values to Hebrew letters for textual mysticism; the Chaldean school refined name-numbers; modern Western numerology fused these streams in the 20th century around five core numbers.

03The Five Core NumbersAttributed

Life Path (birth date) is the road itself — fixed from birth, the lesson you walk. Expression / Destiny (full birth name) is how you walk it — talents and the work that fits. Soul Urge (vowels) is why you secretly walk — inner desire. Personality (consonants) is the first impression others read. Birthday Number is a small but specific gift carried from the day you arrived.

Around these, numerologists track your Personal Year on the nine-year cycle (1 planting … 9 harvest/letting-go), Maturity and Pinnacle numbers where life turns, and Karmic Debt flags (13, 14, 16, 19) wherever they appear in your sums.

04How a reading worksAttributed

In the Pythagorean method, letters are given the values A=1 through I=9, then J=1 through R=9 and S=1 through Z=8. The values are summed and reduced by adding digits until a single digit remains, except for the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which many practitioners keep unreduced.

The Life Path comes from the full birth date. The Expression number comes from all the letters of the birth name. The Soul Urge uses the vowels only, and the Personality number uses the consonants. Every step can be checked by hand, which is part of the method’s appeal.

A personal year number is found by adding the day and month of birth to the current year. The nine-year cycle that results is read as a rhythm from planting to harvest.

06What it can and cannot tell youEditorial

Numerology is arithmetic with a layer of interpretation. The arithmetic is exact, but there is no evidence that the numbers describe people. The interpretation is a vocabulary of qualities to reflect on.

Different schools disagree on the letter table, the master numbers and which name to use: the birth name, the name in use, or both. A reading should state its choices.
