Your birth skyrising, Moon and Sun
Give a date, a time and a place, and see which sign was rising, where the Moon stood, and which lunar mansion held it.
Marks on each heading:Attributed A named tradition or text says this. It is not proof that anything will happen.Calculated An observation from astronomy or arithmetic, with its conventions stated.Editorial Our own wording. It is not a quotation of any source.
01Cast your skyCalculated
Enter when and where you were born and the page works out the rising sign, the Moon sign with its nakshatra, the Sun sign, the positions of all nine grahas, the chart and the first Vimshottari period. It runs in your browser. Your date and time are not sent anywhere, saved, or placed in the page address. Only the place name you type is looked up on our server.
02How the numbers are reachedCalculated
The Sun, Moon and planets are placed with the open-source astronomy-engine library, which follows the JPL planetary ephemerides. Each position is the apparent geocentric longitude on the ecliptic of the date, corrected for the time light takes to arrive. The ayanamsa is then subtracted to move from the tropical zodiac to the sidereal one.
The rising sign comes from the sidereal time at the birth place. The page computes the right ascension of the meridian from the Greenwich sidereal time and your longitude, then finds the point of the ecliptic crossing the eastern horizon at your latitude. The result sits on the horizon to within a thousandth of a degree.
Rāhu and Ketu are the mean lunar nodes, the usual choice in Jyotisha. Houses are whole signs counted from the Lagna. Vimshottari periods use a year of 365.25 days. The ayanamsa for Lahiri follows the Swiss Ephemeris definition. The Raman and Krishnamurti options are offset from it by fixed amounts, so treat them as close, not exact.
As a check, the page reproduces the widely published chart for 15 August 1947 at midnight in Delhi: Taurus rising, the Sun and Moon in Cancer, and the Moon in Pushya.
03What it cannot doEditorial
The birth time decides the rising sign. The Lagna moves about one degree every four minutes, so a time rounded to the hour can land in a different sign. If the record says “morning”, the Lagna is unknown, and the page will not guess it.
Clocks are not always what they seem. Before about 1950, many places kept local mean time or a zone we would no longer recognise. The time zone database covers much of this, but not every village. Daylight saving, war-time clocks and a midwife’s watch are all sources of error.
It does not interpret. The page gives positions, not predictions. For what a sign or a nakshatra is said to mean, the sign pages and the chapters on grahas and houses give the tradition’s own words and name their limits. There are no divisional charts, strengths or yogas here, and the page does not claim that any of it forecasts a life.
04A quicker tool: where was the Sun?Calculated
If you only want to know where the Sun stood on a date, or to convert a longitude you already have, use these.
Calculated, to about a tenth of a degree for the Sun. The Moon and the ascendant need a full ephemeris and a birth time and place, which is why this page does not guess them.
