Many skies

One momentmany skies

One birth moment, drawn by many civilisations of star-reading. Each tradition counts the same instant differently, and each deserves its own frame.

01Western natal wheelAttributed

Tropical zodiac, whole-sign or quadrant houses cut from the horizon, planets and their aspects.

The wheel is a circle of twelve equal signs starting at the March equinox. The ascendant sits on the left and the houses run anticlockwise below it. A reader looks at which sign each planet is in, which house it falls in, and which planets form angles with each other, called aspects.

02North and South Indian chartsAttributed

The sidereal zodiac in two square layouts: the same houses and grahas.

The North Indian layout keeps the houses fixed in a diamond-and-triangle grid, with the Lagna at the top. The South Indian layout keeps the signs fixed in a square and marks the Lagna. A reader works with the same planets, signs and houses, only drawn differently.

03D9 NavamsaAttributed

A ninefold division of every sign, read as the chart’s deeper layer.

Each sign is cut into nine parts of 3°20′, which are the padas of the nakshatras. Every planet then receives a second sign by where its degree falls. The result is a second chart, read alongside the first, and in particular for marriage and for the strength of a planet.

04Chinese pillarsAttributed

Year, month, day and hour as paired stems and branches.

Four columns of two characters each give eight characters in all. Each column pairs one of ten stems with one of twelve branches. The day stem stands for the person, and the other seven characters are read in relation to it.

06Javanese wetonAttributed

The seven-day week meeting the five-day pasaran.

A Javanese birth day is a pair: the weekday and one of five market-days (Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wage, Kliwon). Each carries a numeric value, and the sum is read for character and for the compatibility of two people. The cycle repeats every 35 days.

The side-by-side chart for your own birth moment is not part of this preview. This page explains what each tradition draws and how to read it. A fully calculated version needs a birth date, time and place, which is why it is held back until the calculations can be shown and checked.
